October 19, Life On The Farm

After an early morning hike up the canyon behind our B&B, and finding several African Penguins along the beach in Betty's Bay, we headed east toward Heidelberg.  What we anticipated being about a 3 hour drive turned into about a 6 hour drive due to our taking the back roads to bird.  It was worth it though, as we had really nice close views of Blue Cranes, South Africa's national bird.  We are spending the next 2 nights at Skeiding Guest Farm, an out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere accommodation. It's very nice though, and we just got back to our room after a 3 hour dinner in the guest house dining room with 2 British couples.  Can't believe what we had for dinner - Ostrich steak cooked over the braai (a wood fire bar-b-que).  We'll depart early tomorrow morning for the day at Grootvadersbosch Nature Preserve, a native forest about a half-hour's drive from the farm.
Photos are of an African Penguin, Blue Cranes, a Southern Masked Weaver, Skeiding Guest Farm, the view from the farm's veranda.
