October 9, Back to Johannesburg
We did a little wandering around Skukuza Camp this morning, where we've been staying the past 6 days, before having a leisurely breakfast and heading out for Joburg. It was a 5 hour drive with many nodding heads - EXCEPT for Brenden - until we arrived at our accommodations close to the airport where we will fly out of tomorrow morning for Cape Town. We wrapped up our trip bird list with Brenden this evening over dinner, tallying a very impressive 255 bird species and 34 mammal species over 8 days. We are all taking away wonderful memories of an unforgettable week in an amazing part of the world. As Steve, Priscilla, Tom and I walked back to our rooms after saying goodbye to Brenden, we commented that we're on our own now - no one to find the right habitat for each bird, and recognize each song that we're hearing, and point out the slightest movement in the tree or bush where the bird is hiding. We'll have to work harder now.
