October 4, Journey to Kruger NP

Another 12 hour day with lots of stops along the way in many types of habitat.  We began at an elevation this morning of about 3500' and went up to around 6000' at Mt. Sheba and then dropped down the eastern escarpment to the lowland savannah of Kruger.  This diverse range of elevation and habitat gave us about 30 new species of birds and some beautiful scenery.  Highlights today included seeing the national bird of South Africa - the Blue Crane - and viewing zebra, hippos, and white rhinos.  Our bird list stands at around 150, thanks to Brenden, our amazing Rockjumper bird guide for this first week.  He knows all of the bird songs/calls, and where to find each species.  We couldn't have asked for a finer birder or person!
Photos are of a African Emerald Cuckoo, a Pied Kingfisher, hippos, Giant Kingfisher, and an African Fish Eagle.
