October 13, Goodbyes to Sylvia & Peter, and on to the Karoo

Tom and I got up early and drove down to the bakery when it opened at 6:30 this morning to pick up pastries for breakfast.  On our way there we noticed LOTS of dorsal fins surfacing in the bay - most likely bottle-nose dolphins!  We had a leisurely morning on the deck at Dunvegan Guest House watching birds, eating our pastries, and enjoying Peter's wonderful cappuccinos.  Afterwards, we did a walk up Table Mountain and found numerous flowers, and continued up into a saddle where we were able to look over to see the bay on the other side of the mountain.  We said our goodbyes to Sylvia and Peter mid-morning after 3 really enjoyable days at their guest house, and know that their place will be hard to beat.
We took a very scenic drive over Bain's Kloof Pass today and are now in Ceres for the next 2 days to explore the Karoo.  We are staying at the same guest house as our birding friends from Eugene, Dave & Sally Hill, as they're finishing up a 2 1/2 week Rockjumper tour today.
Photos are of beginning our walk up Table Mountain, Dunvegan Guest House from the trail, the next 3 are flowers on the trail, the bay on the other side of Table Mountain from the saddle, the well-designed stone trail, Long-tailed Wydah, a huge protea just coming into bloom, and a Fiscal Flycatcher.

  1. It was great seeing you and meeting Steve & Priscilla in Ceres! We are just now getting over major jet lag. Jealous we didn't see/photograph any Puff Adders! [But then what is most disconcerting is that it's hard to know whether we walked by a few without even noticing, as we wandered through the brush!!!] We really liked the West Coast NP, too. Totally agree the Karoo was AMAZING and reminiscent of Eastern Oregon. Keep cool! Look forward to swapping stories with you upon your return! - Dave & Sal
